What is Internal Family Systems & TIST?

Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, and Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST), developed by Dr. Janina Fisher, are evidence-based approaches for healing trauma and emotional distress.

These methods recognize that our mind is naturally made of different “parts”—such as an inner critic, a protective manager, or a vulnerable wounded part. When trauma or stress occurs, parts adopt extreme roles (perfectionism, numbing, anxiety) to protect us from pain. IFS gently unburdens these parts and restores leadership to your core Self—the calm, compassionate center within you.

Who Is IFS Helpful For?

Parts work is ideal if you already understand your past well, but still feel stuck in automatic reactions that talk therapy hasn’t shifted:

Inner Conflicts & Self-Criticism

Harsh self-judgment, perfectionism, chronic shame, or people-pleasing.

Trauma & Survival Reactions

Sudden emotional flooding, panic, or urges to shut down and numb out.

Relational & Attachment Wounds

Fears of loss, boundary struggles, or repeating unhealthy relationship patterns.

Internal Impasses

Feeling torn between “part of me wants X, but another part wants Y.”

What to Expect in a Session

Sessions follow a safe, collaborative process that moves entirely at your system’s pace:

Grounding

We tune into present sensations or emotions to identify the active “part” while staying anchored in safety.

Getting to Know the Part

With curiosity, we listen to the part’s story and validate its protective role without judgment.

Unburdening & Healing

Once protective parts feel safe, we help underlying wounded parts release stored pain, fear, or shame.

Restoring Self-Leadership

As parts step down from extreme roles, your core Self leads with clarity, balance, and compassion.

Key Benefits

Non-Pathologizing

Views all symptoms and behaviors as protective adaptations rather than defects.

Reduces Inner Conflict

Transforms self-criticism and self-sabotage into internal cooperation and self-compassion.

Safe Trauma Resolution

Heals underlying emotional pain without overwhelming your system or forcing retraumatization.

Lasting Self-Reliance

Empowers you to navigate life’s challenges directly from your own inner wisdom.

Research & Neuroscience

IFS is an officially recognized evidence-based practice (SAMHSA) grounded in affective neuroscience and attachment theory.

Clinical Evidence

Randomized controlled trials show significant reductions in PTSD, depression, and anxiety, alongside marked increases in self-compassion and emotional regulation.

Memory Reconsolidation

Research shows parts work helps re-regulate the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, permanently updating implicit survival memories and nervous system responses.
