Deep Brain Reorientation (DBR)

Healing Trauma at Its Deepest Neurological Roots

What is Deep Brain Reorienting?

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is an evidence-informed trauma therapy developed by Scottish psychiatrist Dr. Frank Corrigan. It targets the deepest, most primitive parts of the brain—the brainstem and midbrain—where instinctive survival responses like threat detection, shock, and freeze are held.

When something overwhelming happens, your nervous system reacts in milliseconds—long before your thinking mind can process it. DBR works bottom-up: by slowing down and tracking these early physical reactions, it helps your nervous system safely release stored survival stress without requiring you to relive painful memories.

Who Is DBR Helpful For?

DBR is ideal if you already understand your past well, but still feel stuck in automatic reactions that talk therapy hasn’t shifted:

Attachment & Relational Shock

Early relational wounds, fears of loss, and early childhood trauma.

Persistent Survival Activation

Chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, panic, or feeling constantly on guard.

Emotional Overwhelm or Shutdown

Sudden waves of fear, rage, or shame—or feelings of numbness, disconnection, and dissociation.

Somatic Trauma

Physical tension and symptoms for which there are no conscious memories or explanations.

What to Expect in a Session

DBR uses a precise, 4-stage sequence designed to keep you safe, grounded, and present throughout:

01 — Grounding

We establish present-moment stability and physical presence so your system feels completely safe.

02 — Identifying the Focus

We touch lightly on a specific trigger or memory—just enough to activate the nervous system without diving into story details.

03 — Tracking “Orienting Tension”

I guide you to track the body’s earliest physical response—the micro-bracing in the head, eyes, forehead, jaw, or neck as the brain prepares to face a threat. This focus keeps you anchored and prevents emotional flooding or dissociation.

04 — Processing & Integration

Staying with this orienting tension allows stored shock and emotional pain to safely release layer by layer, ending with stabilization to help your system integrate the change.

Key Benefits

No Retraumatization

Resolves deep trauma without re-telling or re-living painful details.

Dissociation-Safe

The focus on brainstem tension keeps you present and grounded.

Clears the Root Alarm

Resolves automatic physical panic before it escalates into racing thoughts.

Restores Inner Safety

Helps your nervous system recognize that the past threat is truly over.

Research & Neuroscience

Developed by Dr. Frank Corrigan using affective neuroscience, DBR targets subcortical midbrain structures—specifically the superior colliculus (orienting tension in eyes/neck) and periaqueductal gray (instinctive fight, flight, freeze, and shame responses).

Clinical Evidence

A randomized controlled trial in the Journal of Psychiatric Research showed significant reductions in PTSD symptoms, proving DBR to be highly effective and well-tolerated.

Attachment & Memory

By processing the precise neurobiological sequence where shock occurs, DBR permanently updates implicit threat appraisals—resolving deep developmental and relational trauma that talk therapy often misses.
